Palm Cheese Cookies are quick and easy cookies made from savory cheddar cheese cookies coated with sweet crunchy palm sugar.
These Palm Cheese Cookies are currently booming for the past 2 years in Indonesia. So, I could not wait to try these at home to know what the fuss was about. After trying them myself personally, I now understand why people are loving these cookies.
Tell Me About These Cookies
- Texture. The palm sugar coating is surprisingly super crunchy, while the inside is also crunchy with a delicate texture.
- Flavor. Sweet and savory in each bite. The cookies are pretty similar to the western snowball cookies but taste richer and because of the addition of grated cheddar cheese. At first, I expected these cookies to be overly sweet because of the sugar coating. However, I was surprised that the palm sugar was just mildly sweet and tasted more like caramelized sugar.
- Ease. This recipe is so quick and easy to whip up that it can be made in one bowl. No stand mixer or hand mixer is required. Moreover, no chilling is required.

Palm Cheese Cookies
Palm Cheese Cookies are quick and easy cookies made from savory cheddar cheese cookies coated with sweet crunchy palm sugar.
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup unsalted butter (150 gr), room temperature
- 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar (32 gr)
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese (60 gr)
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (210 gr)
- 3 1/2 tbsp cornstarch (25 gr)
- 3 tbsp milk powder (25 gr)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup palm sugar (100 gr)
- 1-2 tbsp milk, if necessary
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 300°F/150°C and line two baking sheets with parchment papers or silicone mats.
- Mix wet ingredients. In a large bowl, cream together butter with confectioners' sugar until well combined.
- Add egg yolk, vanilla extract, and grated cheddar cheese into the butter mixture and mix until well combined.
- Add dry ingredients. Sift in the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, milk powder, and salt into the mixture and mix with a spatula until well incorporated.
- Shape and roll into sugar. Pour the palm sugar into a bowl. Scoop out 1 1/2 teaspoons of dough and roll into balls, then roll into the sugar. If the dough is too dry to roll into the sugar (the sugar does not stick to the dough properly), try adding 1-2 tbsp of milk to the dough.
- Arrange the balls on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes. When the cookies are done, transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
Notes
Make sure to measure the flour correctly if using volume measurement. The cookies will end up too dry if you are adding too much flour. Use a spoon to scoop the flour into the measuring cup. Then, level the top with a knife or other straight-edged utensil.
