Ingredients You Need

chocolate rum balls ingredients
  • Plain biscuits – The biscuits are the base of the dough mixture, so be sure to use a fresh package of biscuits for the best flavor.
  • Cocoa powder – It adds chocolate flavor to the dough mixture.
  • Butter/margarine – To bind the crumbs and add richness. The butter will help to set the balls in the fridge.
  • Condensed milk – To bind the crumbs and add sweetness.
  • Rum – Dark rum gives this recipe its signature flavor and contributes the needed moisture to help the dough stick together when you form the balls.
  • Chocolate sprinkles – For coating.

Variations

While these treats are delicious as they are, you can switch up the ingredients to customize the flavors.

  • Coatings – You can coat the balls in chopped nuts, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, finely shredded coconut, or dip them in melted chocolate.
  • Biscuits – You can use graham crackers, Oreo, or Biscoff cookies for a different flavor.
  • Alcohol – You can also make this recipe with brandy, bourbon, or spiced rum. Or use rum extract for the non-alcoholic version if you still want the balls to have the boozy flavor.
  • Add-ins – Mix the dough mixture with dried fruits, such as cranberries and raisins. Or add chopped nuts to the dough mixture if you prefer.

How to Make

how to make chocolate rum balls

  1. Crush the biscuits into fine crumbs.
  2. Mix the biscuits, cocoa powder, melted butter, condensed milk, and rum until well combined.
  3. Scoop 1 tbsp of the mixture and shape into balls
  4. Coat the balls with chocolate sprinkles. Chill the balls in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to let them set.

Do I Have to Use Real Rum?

No, you can use rum extract instead.  Keep in mind that rum extract is very concentrated so you’ll use less of it than actual rum. Start with less, taste the mixture, and add more as needed.

Pro Tips

  • Chill the dough in the refrigerator for a few minutes if the dough is too soft to shape.
  • Make them in advance. Feel free to make these a couple of days ahead of when you want to serve them. The extra time helps the crushed biscuits in the balls absorb the rum flavor. Store the balls in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve them.
